Decorative orbs have been around now for a while. I felt like mine were kinda dated and well just blah. I really just didn’t like them anymore. Then I happened to see in a BHG magazine where they used Styrofoam balls covered them with fabric to make decorative orbs. They were so cute! I thought why don’t I just take the ones I already had and decoupage them! Here is my version..
Materials needed: Decorative orbs, various sizes 4in & 5in. Quick Cuts single fabric squares 18″ x 21″(Wal-Mart in the quilting section), burlap (burlapfabric.com), and/or any fabric you might have left over from another project. Mod Podge Hard Coat, Fiskars rotary cutter & mat, scissors and a sponge applicator.
Cut your fabric with a rotary cutter in long 1 inch strips. I found one of the Quick Cuts squares is enough fabric for two orbs! I used Hard Coat Mod Podge because a few of my orbs were covered with tile and grout, and I wanted to make sure the fabric would stick. Paint the Mod Podge on the orb and then start wrapping the fabric. Let the fabric wrap naturally where it wants to go in a crisscross fashion so it will lie flat. Paint over the fabric with the Mod Podge as you go. Wrap it until the end, you might need two layers so the old orb color or pattern does not show through. Make sure you coat with a good amount of Mod Podge. Let it Dry! That’s it.
* Just a hint when using the burlap for the orb, it will get messy, it doesn’t like to stick, so work slowly and use lots of Mod Podge. On thicker fabrics, you may need to cut small strips and apply near the end instead of wrapping, so the shape of the orb remains round.*
Good Luck! This super easy and so updated. I love them again!
