Patina Sconce

patina sconce distress paintThis sconce was hanging on a wall in one of my thrift store hideouts for months. I kept seeing it every time I went in, I would glance at it and think that it had potential, but it was brown early American wood, which made it tough to see what it could become. One evening I was drooling on Pinterest and I saw it, that ugly old sconce with a fabulous patina paint job!

Well you know I bought it that week! I got home and realized I lost the Pinterest pic, I forgot to pin it!! So… I winged it and painted it teal, with patina!

Obsessing over finding that pic on Pinterest….I then found these light colored babies by Adian Gray of Layla Grayce!

So I got to work painting and patining some more. About twenty coats of paint later is my top version above. I used Spray Paint then countless coats of plaid acrylic paint, let dry, only for around 5-10 minutes and then wipe them hard in one direction to smear and patina them with a paper towel.

If the paint is too dry it won’t get the patina look to it. You can use sand paper, but I found it removed too much of the paint. Then I painted a white in the creases for a white wash look and rubbed it off with a paper towel! I painted the black base with brown texture spray paint to make it look rusted! I would love to see more versions….I just may have to paint it again.. Good Luck!
