DIY Wall Art Lucky Sign

I wanted to make something really unique for my home, and this Lucky sign did the trick. My kitchen is slowly getting covered with chickens, so I found it fitting to add this sign over my sink! I used my Silhouette Cameo to make the stencil for the lettering using Contact paper, but don’t stop reading now if you do not have one, you can still use the paper stencil method found here. I used a different technique instead of sanding this time, to make an old and weathered look. Let me show you how I did it~

Materials: 1x8x4 Choice Wood Poplar plank (Lowes), Silhouette Cameo, Contact paper, rotary cutter, ruler, Minwax Special Walnut wood stain, homemade chalk paint, acrylic paints, sponge applicator.

Cut your wood down to size, mine is 29 inches. (I had Lowes cut it for me). I shabbied up my wood up with a hammer, then used a box cutter to shave the sharp edges off to make it look damaged. Stain the top and the edges of the wood with the stain. Let it dry over night. Mix a small amount of chalk paint (recipe found here) and lightly paint the top only. Feather your paint towards the edges. Do not paint the edges. This will make them look sanded and weathered without having to sand. I used 2 light coats so the stain will bleed through the paint for a more weathered look.

I basically used the same Silhouette settings for contact paper as I used for my Rail Road and Sundries Sign.

Font for Lucky is Wild Rodeo.

Type your letters and then rotate them 90CW vertical.

*Use these dimensions as a guide. Yours may differ from mine.*

Dingbat for star is Seeing Stars.

I manually made my setting for the vinyl size to 8.5 x 15. My contact paper was already a 15 inch roll so I cut 9 inch wide strips with a rotary cutter. Reset to the small width paper on the Silhouette. Set on cutting mat: none. Feed your vinyl and cut.

Place the vinyl on the wood and measure with ruler to center and mark with a pencil. Peel top of stencil off and line up the stencil and pull straight down to center. This can be tricky, go slow and adjust as needed. If you feel the contact paper is not sticking well, use a blow dryer to heat up the contact paper to get a better seal to the wood. For the stars, I removed the circles and placed them on the wood to measure and center them. Add the stencil over the circle  and press down. I found this is a much easier way to center the circles.

Lightly dab on your paint using a sponge applicator.

Stencil Tip: Remove the contact paper before it dries. I think the longer a stencil stays on, the longer it has time to bleed. So remove as soon as you are finished painting. Touch up any mistakes.
