DIY Bouy Nautical Lantern

Today I am sharing this super cute DIY Bouy Lantern I made using Martha Stewart Paint and Stencils I got from Blitsy.com! I am lovin the look of all the wooden buoys I’ve seen this year, and I knew I wanted to make one too.

I used this large vintage pickle jar (hopefully not a pigs feet or eggs jar, yikes) to make this super easy craft. This bouy would look great in a cluster or as a great focal centerpiece. Here’s how I made it~

DIY Bouy Lantern

Supplies:

  • Large glass jar with locking lid
  • Martha Stewart High Gloss Multi-surface Acrylic Paint in Habanero and Surf
  • Black and white acrylic paint
  • Martha Stewart Adhesive Stencils
  • large 2 inch stencils (for the number 7) paint brushes
  • painters tape
  • rope

Instructions:

Paint stripes on glass jar

Tape your jar and paint the white stripe first. Let it dry, then tape a smaller stripe under the white one, paint it with MS acrylic paint in Surf. When you pull the tape off you will have chippy and uneven lines. I left mine this way to make the jar have a more rustic weather worn look, but you can touch it up as needed.

Turn the jar upside down, tape off a stripe and paint the bottom of the jar with MS acrylic paint in Habanero.

Stencil numbers on glass jar bouy

Tape a large 2 inch stencil to the jar and paint the number 7 with black acrylic paint. Remove the stencil and let the paint dry. Add your Martha Stewart Adhesive Stencils under the first number and paint. Remove the stencils and touch up as needed.

Loop rope on jar to hang lantern

I added a piece of rope through the latch and wire on other side of lid and tied it in a knot! And that’s it! How cute is that? Lovin this super easy project!

  1. Cute idea! I found this over at Inspire Me Monday. As sailors, I am always entertaining at the boat or on the dock and I will have to create a couple of these to add to the dockside decor! Thanks for sharing your great creativeness!
