Hey guys! I made more summer jewelry! Every year at this time I love to make a whole new one of a kind wardrobe of jewelry. With my love affair with suede still going strong, I decided to make a great fringe necklace and matching earrings.

Working with leather is so easy and fun. It can seem intimating a first because of the shear toughness of the material. I used thin sheets of suede (found at your local craft store or see my link in supply list), so they can be easily cut with sharp fabric scissors and/or a rotary cutter.

You will also need to make sure you use an adhesive made for leather, other adhesives will not bond. Let’s go get our bohemian on and make a simple suede necklace!

Cut a 5.5 inch x 3.75 inch rectangle out of the suede leather with sharp scissors. Measure and cut the necklace center point around 3.5 inches from the bottom on both sides.

I  made two different necklaces, one painted one not. If you decide to paint, put a design on the leather using washi tape and acrylic paint.

Let the paint dry then move onto the next step.

With a rotary cutter start slicing thin fringe from one end until you are almost to the center. Make sure to leave enough room to fold the top. Then start cutting fringe from the other side. I like to leave a thick center section and cut into it to make fringe at an angle, or you can just cut all the fringe even all the way across.

Fold the top over.  I used a thin paint brush as a guide, because it was similar in diameter as the cording I used. Add a thin line of E6000 adhesive to the fold and press. For best results, let it dry over night.

Feed the cording through the fold and measure the necklace for wear. Tie the ends in a knot and that’s it!! This is my new go to necklace. I like to layer it with my other leather necklaces too. So cool and trendy and super easy to recreate! Earrings in pics coming in next post!

  1. Necklace looks really great in one photo but for some reason my computer isn’t showing rest of photos. Your words helped me to understand how to make the necklace but little hard without photos.
Our internet service is terrible here, so never know what’s going on. Valley needs much more power, but people in power won’t spend money to fix problem. Has been complained about by many computer users in valley. We live 18 miles west of Grand Junction, Co out in rural area. We have only two sources for internet out here, Century Link and Hughes Net. We pay for high speed but don’t get it.
Would love to make necklace for grand daughters, think they would love it.
