DIY Tapestry No Weave

I have been chomping at the bit to share this post with you! I actually planned on making it before my Gallery Wall series, but I got carried away with all of the pics I had to repurpose. So ta-da here it is and it could not of turned out better! Here’s the story behind it.

Walking in Target I came across a Nate Burkus Tapestry, I remembered seeing these hung in almost every home in the early 80’s. Looking at his creation, I thought, well it was cute but really small. Then the light bulb went off and I hurried down to the throw rug isle. I found a beautiful navy blue chenille/ jute patterned rug on clearance and the creating began.

This is a super easy way to make your own tapestry in a couple of hours without learning how to weave! Here’s how it’s done:

No weave tapestry tutorial

Trim edge of rug off tapestry

Cut one end of the rug off and unravel 7-8 inches up. Set the chenille and jute aside.

remove rug layers to create fringe tapestry

This will leave a thin fringe layer on the bottom of the tapestry.

tie fringe on edge of rug tapestry

Next tie the fringe in a double knot every inch or so across the edge to keep the rug from unraveling.

hot glue edge at fringe layer tapestry

Turn the rug over and add a heavy line of hot glue across the bottom edge above the fringe to strengthen and keep the rug from unraveling even further.

Next you want to bulk up the fringe. Take the blue chenille you pulled off and cut 14+ inch strips {ex. fringe is 7 inches, cut rope/chenille to 14 inches}. To add the fringe your are going to tie a simple Larks Head Knot. If you run out of Chenille start using your Navy Blue Marine yarn in it’s place.

Simple & easy tapestry no weave

Fold the chenille in half. Take the crochet needle and loop it under a woven thread in the edge of rug. Grab the chenille with the crochet hook and pull the loop of the chenille under the thread.

Larks Head Knot for tapestry

Take the loose ends of the chenille and put them through the loop and pull to tighten. This is the only knot I used throughout the whole project.

separate rope to make fringe tapestry

The jute fringe I added is actually unraveled rope. You could use the discarded jute form the rug if you like. Cut the length you want your fringe x2, like above.

Pull apart the layers of the rope and add them via Larks Head Knot individually. I provided a printable pattern of my tapestry to go by.

How to hang the tapestry: On the top end of the rug, take your scissors and rip out the seam of the folded band edge of the rug. Mine was folded twice so I unrolled it, folded it over once, so the cafe rod would fit inside and hot glued the edge back down to the back of the rug. If your rug does not have a band just fold over the edge of the rug and hot glue. Add the cafe rod, cut a long piece of jute twine and tie it to each end. Hang it up!

Trim fringe on tapestry

When you are finished, trim all your fringe layers with heavy duty scissors into the pattern you choose. And that’s it!

I love, love, love it!! Next time I think I will make a lighter colored one. I have fallen in love with navy blue this year and this rug had such a neat pattern I couldn’t resist. I hope I inspired you with this post! Enjoy!
