Have you noticed more and more macrame wall hangers showing up in the stores lately? I have, but they don’t look all that easy to make. I took a piece of twine wrapped foam to use as a base and Boucle yarn in an ombre of colors to create this beautiful wall hanging.
This project was shown on the Floracraft® Make It: Fun® Blog last month. It finally made its debut here and today I am showing you get the trendy look of macrame without having to know how to tie intricate knots. Let’s go make one!
Supplies:
- 1 Skein of Boucle Yarn: Color: Multicolor Blue, Grey, Tan, Ivory Ombre
- Wool Yarn: Color: Natural
- FloraCraft® Make It:Fun ® Foam Sheet: 1 x 12 x 36 inch
- Jute Twine
- Low Temp Glue & Gun
- Foam Cutter
- Ruler
Instructions:
Measure and draw a triangle on the foam sheet with these dimensions: 12 x 14 x 12. Cut the triangle out of the foam using a foam cutter. Measure about an inch in from the edge and cut out the center as well. Â Save the center piece for a future project.
Using low-temp glue, adhere one end of the jute twine to one side of the foam. Wrap the jute around the foam, gluing it in smooth lines as you go.
Now you’re ready for the yarn.  I used a multicolor boucle yarn and cut apart each color on the skein of yarn into color sections.
Cut 5 pieces, 6 feet long, of each of the colors you are going to use. Fold the piece of yarn in half evenly and loop it through the inside of the triangle and over the top.
Pull the loose ends through the loop and tighten.
Slide the loop so it sits snug against the jute twine then tie a simple knot at the base of the triangle to secure.
I added 4 to 5 pieces of yarn in each color section.  I started with the lightest color on the outside and worked my way to the darkest on the inside…then I mirrored the colors on the other side.
Once I finished the hanging yarn, I embellished the center with a yarn tassel.  To make a large tassel, first cut a piece of cardboard to approximately 10″ x 5″. Wrap natural wool yarn around the long side of the cardboard, 40 times.
Place a 12-inch strip of yarn under the yarn and tie it tight at one end of the cardboard.
Slip the yarn off of the cardboard. Tie a small piece of yarn in a knot around the top of the bundled yarn.
Trim the loops off of the end of your yarn. Tie the tassel to the center boucle yarn and trim off excess.
For the bottom edge of the wall hanging cut the strings that bind the boucle yarn around 6 inches from the bottom of the wall hanging. Gently run a comb or fingers at the ends of the boucle yarn to fray the ends. Trim the bottom of the wall hanging so the yarn falls evenly.
This came out so great I think I need more in different colors for my home! It makes a soft but beautiful statement to my decor.

Very pretty with a great tutorial that will make it easy to make. #MerryMonday
Could you please tell me exactly what brand of yarn you used for this? Thank you!
Hi Linda,
I can not find the wrapper that came with the yarn skein. I can tell you I bought it a Michaels Craft Store and they hade a few other colors to chose from at the time. Any ombre boucle yarn will work. Sorry, I can’t tell you more, I hope this helps.
Kim
Thank you for taking the time to help!
