Every year when March rolls around, McDonald’s releases their signature green shake to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. The Shamrock Shake is an iconic seasonal treat that has been around since its debut in 1970.
Did you know the original shake was made with lemon lime sherbet, vanilla ice cream and green food coloring? Then they changed it to vanilla ice cream shake with green food dye in 1973. They added the mint flavored syrup in 1983 making it a mint milkshake!
The great thing is you don’t have to wait until February or March to enjoy this delicious treat! It is so simple to just make it at home with just a few ingredients.
We added a drizzle of chocolate syrup to the glass for added flavor. You can leave that part out if you want the taste of the original fast food favorite.
You can also use mint chocolate chip ice cream instead of vanilla ice cream and mint extract. Make it an adult cocktail version of this milkshake by adding your favorite spirits to the mix! See my suggestions below.
