lately, I have been a little distracted. I moved from the East coast to the West coast a couple of weeks ago and my life was literally turned upside down! We traded our sizable home on a large lot for a much smaller 1300 square foot California Bungalow that overlooks Marina Del Rey and the Santa Monica Mountains. We are so smitten with our new small space home but since it was built in the 1950s, it sadly falls short on storage.

The biggest moving challenge for us was downsizing our lives and belongings. We sold, donated and gave away most of our stuff. Now we here we are in our new place and the new challenge we are facing is buying furniture that a.) fits the space and b.) finding quality furniture and style we are looking for.

The Best Storage Beds for Small Spaces

The first rooms we started with were the bedrooms. We had Leesa mattresses (our fav mattresses by the way) on the floor and after a few days, we had enough of that! This being an older home means it has limited closet space and much smaller bedrooms than our previous home. To help save space decided to go with storage beds to store most of our bulky items and clothes. The more storage I can create the less clutter we will have.

Storage Bed Options

Let’s explore some storage bed options. There lots of styles and drawer configurations to choose from. You can have drawers on the sides, drawers on the end of the bed or even have the whole bed lift up for full-size storage underneath. We wanted the drawers on the sides because our room dimensions were pretty tight. I wanted to have extra space at the end of the bed for a dresser.

When you choose drawers on the sides of the storage bed, you have to consider the space where the drawers open and your nightstand space. You do not want to have to move the nightstand to get into a drawer at the head of the bed. We found some clever options that allow the drawers to open under the nightstand! Super cool!

For our master bedroom, we chose Crate & Barrel’s Blair Queen Storage Bed. We wanted a warm walnut color and a bed that had a lot of drawer space. There weren’t a lot of options for this color bed. We searched everywhere for one that had the open nightstands. We only found two to choose from. The Matera Bed by Design Within Reach was a close contender. But for the price, the Crate&Barrel bed was a better deal.

The Blair Storage bed has six super long and deep drawers, three on each side of the bed. We also bought the matching Blair nightstands. These nightstands are built so the drawers slide out right underneath the table. Such a clever idea and so perfect for small spaces. We so love this bedroom set! The color is gorgeous.

The storage bed for my daughter’s room is a platform style bed. She likes to change her furniture out a lot so she went with Ikeas Brimnes Storage Bed in white. This storage bed has four super deep and long drawers, two on each side of the bed. They will hold a lot of clothes, toys, blankets or pillows. Great for a children’s or teen’s bedroom. You could literally store all of your clothes in these deep spaces.

Hint: The Ikea beds we have purchased in the past have held up better than most of the other high-end furniture pieces we had over the years. If they are put together correctly, they are super solid and hold up well with age. They are a great choice when things start to get pricey.

There were a lot of other great contenders in the storage bed selections online. I researched and combed the internet obsessively to find just the right bed for our new home.
